04/15 - observational research, artist: charlotte ager

I looked at Ager's illustrations originally as I knew a focus within her work is observational studies and that that related to my project directly. The style in which her drawings are created is particularly unique and something that I haven't seen excessively before. The distinctive artistic style and the way Ager has represented the subjects she has studied is eye-catching and the areas in which detail is lacking is made up for in other areas, I am particularly interested in the composition of her illustrations and I am interested in experimenting similarly. I think that particularly because of the limited use of outlining mostly people but as well the surroundings within the illustrations, the illustrations themselves look considerably childlike and quick, which is a quality that I think works in Ager's favour as it is refreshing and doesn't require an intense focus on the details that are presented.

The colour palettes presented throughout a large quantity of her illustrations that I found on her blog are very limited and pastel like and I think that this is a redeeming and popular method of adding colour to illustrations, and I think that my work relates similarly to Ager's in this sense in a few ways.

final major project - test animation

I created the preliminary version of this animation from observing people in the high street and began to want to test out how I could be able to animate further the observational drawings I was creating. I began by scanning this drawing into photoshop and then adjusting the size of the image. I maintained a focus on 3 simple frames sequenced at 0.5 seconds apart from one another and began to re draw sections of the original observational drawing that I wanted to showcase the movement of the people I drew. I think the overall result and the length at which the animation took to complete is substantially sufficient but for further animations I want to focus on a closer relation to the original drawings and manipulating the movements, especially to capture the exact likeness of the original drawing and to create a more fluid animation.

'the sequential image': project evaluation

After being given the brief for the Sequential Image project, I looked forward to being able to create imagery that was not only sequential, but that portrayed my original chosen narrative. As this was something I hadn't done before within my work for this course, I felt it would benefit me should I choose to include a narrative in my final major project, and I wanted to take advantage of as many different techniques within my imagery as practice steps for my final pieces of work in the future. I enjoyed the process of coming up with ideas for narrative and then expanding on them. Character concepts and designs felt especially new, however I really enjoyed this aspect of the project. An afterthought from the project would be to in the future consider the focus on sequential imagery more within the images I am creating. To some extent I think I achieved this, however I could have put more emphasis on this idea.
 I think my use of animation within my images have potential and could be taken further, and the techniques I used are definitely an aspect of the project that I will take forward to use with later pieces of work. Concerning the images themselves, I think after looking at them after the porject, I think I should have scaled the composition a little bit smaller as this would have improved the overall look of the collection of images, however I think as a whole they are still successful.

'the sequential image': project outcomes

For the sequential image project, I chose to form a series of images focusing on a narrative around the theme of family. I began drawing up conceptual ideas around a set of characters that I could create to portray the narrative I aimed to use, and came up with the mother & son. I wanted to use an odd and peculiar family set up to portray the importance of family and how unimportant differences between individuals are. I wanted a wholehearted set of images, and in doing so wanted to use some form of animation to highlight this. I went on to draw up the original images and then animate individual aspects of them. I think that the outcomes are generally a good representative of the original idea I had at the beginning of the project, and I think I will be able to use the techniques I used throughout this project within work later on.

05/02/15 - printmaking

For this week's printmaking session I aimed to use a single observational drawing I had in my sketchbook and create a repetitive series of prints whilst maintaining uniqueness within each one. With the use of colour and composition I think I was able to make each print unique, and with using found paper to then block portions of the print from coming through I was able to change each of them into something different. 

 I think the repetitiveness of the image printed is considerably effective, but the composition kept throughout makes them collectively a strong series of images in my opinion.

02/15 - 'time' project: 'excursion' evaluation

With the excursion element of the 'Time' project I knew I had to experiment more with techniques and media. I think I did still stick to some of the techniques that I tend to use often, such as fine liner drawings, however there was more experimentation I think than there was previously. I did attempt to use colour as a starting point with several of my drawings, and I think the outcome of some of them was successful due to this.

 I do think I should have experimented with scales as some of the drawings were similar sizes on a double spread. However, I was very pleased with my composition throughout this section of the project.

I think the quality and composition of my drawings was adequately experimental and I am definitely pleased with the outcomes. I think that my use of photography was limited to an extent and that I should have included more taken photographs of what I was drawing. I think this would benefit my drawings to see side by side the comparison.

 Overall, I think the main focus to improve on after this project would be to experiment more with different media consistently.
