'the sequential image': project outcomes

For the sequential image project, I chose to form a series of images focusing on a narrative around the theme of family. I began drawing up conceptual ideas around a set of characters that I could create to portray the narrative I aimed to use, and came up with the mother & son. I wanted to use an odd and peculiar family set up to portray the importance of family and how unimportant differences between individuals are. I wanted a wholehearted set of images, and in doing so wanted to use some form of animation to highlight this. I went on to draw up the original images and then animate individual aspects of them. I think that the outcomes are generally a good representative of the original idea I had at the beginning of the project, and I think I will be able to use the techniques I used throughout this project within work later on.

05/02/15 - printmaking

For this week's printmaking session I aimed to use a single observational drawing I had in my sketchbook and create a repetitive series of prints whilst maintaining uniqueness within each one. With the use of colour and composition I think I was able to make each print unique, and with using found paper to then block portions of the print from coming through I was able to change each of them into something different.
I think the repetitiveness of the image printed is considerably effective, but the composition kept throughout makes them collectively a strong series of images in my opinion.

02/15 - 'time' project: 'excursion' evaluation

With the excursion element of the 'Time' project I knew I had to experiment more with techniques and media. I think I did still stick to some of the techniques that I tend to use often, such as fine liner drawings, however there was more experimentation I think than there was previously. I did attempt to use colour as a starting point with several of my drawings, and I think the outcome of some of them was successful due to this.
I do think I should have experimented with scales as some of the drawings were similar sizes on a double spread. However, I was very pleased with my composition throughout this section of the project.

I think the quality and composition of my drawings was adequately experimental and I am definitely pleased with the outcomes. I think that my use of photography was limited to an extent and that I should have included more taken photographs of what I was drawing. I think this would benefit my drawings to see side by side the comparison.
Overall, I think the main focus to improve on after this project would be to experiment more with different media consistently.

Above are 4 photographs taken using MDF boards with LED lights attached, representing the flow of a river through photography.

Above are three life drawings from various lengths of study. Media used is graphite on A1 paper, all produced life drawings being of the same size.

A scan of a drawing from my sketchbook from an excursion project requiring observational studies of various things, situations and places around us. Media use is fine-liner pen.

A scan of of a page from my sketchbook from a '1,2,3' project, focusing mainly on type and hand rendered type. Media used is fine-liner pens.

A scan of a double spread from my 'People watching' project, focusing on observing people and developing images from said observations. Media used is primarily fine-liner and ink.

A scan from my 'National Holiday' sketchbook, in which these observational drawings were developed into postage stamps for a fictional national holiday. Media is primarily fine-liner pen and coloured pens.

A double spread from my 'National Holiday' project, in which I planned and storyboarded concepts for a promotional animation for an additional outcome.

A scan of my additional outcome for my 'National Holiday' project. The above concept designs lead to producing this storyboard for a promotional animation.

A scan of a page from my 'People Watching' sketchbook, with 3 observational drawings each created in a limited time frame. Media used is graphite, colour crayon and pen.

Above is a scan from my 'People Watching' project, observing and documenting particular situations and poses people are in. Media used is fine-liner pen and crayon.

Above are 4 portrait images taken from my 'Time' project, in which I observed people's behaviour, posture and appearance in short spaces of time. An assortment of sizes and media.

Above are a further 3 portrait images taken from my 'Time' project. I aimed to show movement in a subtle way and focus on basic lines and shape. Range of sizes on cartridge paper, media used primarily fine-liner ink and coloured ink.

Above is a type drawing focusing on hand rendered type and the importance of definition, shape and line. On A3 paper, the media use is inks, pastels and graphite on assorted papers.

Above is an A3 drawing of various objects, aiming to focus on capturing the correct shapes, sizes and lines in a timed session of drawing. Media used is graphite and ink on assorted papers.

Above is an image from the 'Derwent Pulse', in which I took observational drawings of rivers and scaled up individual sections onto large A2 strips to represent the river's flow. Media used is ink, pastel and assorted paper.

Above is a series of images from the 'People Watching' studies during the Collect & Create project. Here I developed multiple observational drawings and focused on line, colour and shape. Media used on both A3 images is primarily ink, acrylic, assorted paper and card.

Above is another series of images from my 'People Watching' studies during the Collect & Create project. I developed these images from a series of observational drawings and attempted to create similarities between each one. Images are of various sizes and the media used is assorted papers, cardboards, and acrylics.

A set of prints from my 'Time' project, I used various observational drawings to develop the mono prints to go alongside the developed images I had created throughout the project.

01/15 - 'time project' evaluation

For this project I decided to focus on movement as it was the obvious choice to be able to use observational drawings and develop them in a way that would then highlight the theme of my project. I think that the extent of my developments is good an shows fluidity with my ideas and a relevant thought process throughout. I think my annotation and the analysis of my work is thorough, however I found myself thinking of improvements to be made when analysing my work afterwards. This could be an indication of rushing my developments possibly, or maybe not thinking elaborately enough about how to develop my work further. For future projects I think I should consider this and try not to rush devleloping my ideas.

I think that the developments of my ideas is considerably thorough and how I have analysed my developed work supports that. I do think that I should have experimented more directly with colour and how I would be able to use it with specific images. While there was some experimentation, I do think had I have chosen to take some risks and used different techniques and forms of media, then the outcomes of my developed images would have benefitted considerably from doing so.
There are certain images that I like more so than others, but I think I did have a coherent theme throughout my developments and that the focus is prominent when observing them.

I do think that the lack of experimentation  I carried out with media hindered this project and my outcomes slightly, and going forward I realise I should be more confident in looking at more techniques  to allow my developed images to go further. I think that the collection of images I have from the project could be developed further should I want to, however I am pleased with my outcomes and my justification of my ideas.
