exhibition and project evaluation

Overall I am very pleased with the outcome of my exhibition. I wanted to include a variety of the image I had created but at the same time make them appear uniform and minimalistic as I didn't want to overcomplicate or overdo the overall exhibition space. I think my focus colours and the layout of the way in which my work is presented compliments this idea and I think it has worked well.
I think my project outcomes are well presented and the process in which got me to this point I think is well constructed and displayed in my sketchbooks.

animation development

I'm unsure with this animation as to which arrangement of colours looks better and think that both are relatively strong, but will choose which one I prefer at a later date.

I am pleased with the result of this animation and I think that the overall choice of colours is one of it's key qualities.

digital imagery

I chose to digitally enhance a drawing I had done whilst observing a group of women talking and use text as a main feature.

digital imagery

I created this image on photoshop and wanted to use it within my developments for this project but am still unsure as whether or not to include colour. On one hand  I feel the overall composition of the image is good but the lack of colour or contrast from the black and white deems it boring. However, the idea of using colour within the image isn't sitting well as I like how it looks. I recorded parts of the conversation the two people I was drawing were having as I wanted to capture the expressions of the conversation and the level of intimacy between the two's speech as this is an indicator of how close and how dependant one is of the other to respond.

interaction imagery continued

I developed an image I drew earlier during the project in attempt to look at the simplicity of the colours I could use throughout the rest of my image development. I think the linework and the extent of colours used throughout the individual images above is effective, however I don't think I will want to focus on such vibrant and abrasive collections of colours together. I do think that with the extent of my digital work for the project so far and the amount of digital work I aim to produce, this was a vital segment in attempting to produce something that I could analyse and use points to change my work further.

'interaction'

I want to go forward with this project and expand my thoughts and view on how I envision interaction and the qualities within the idea of it and which versions of interaction appeal objectively to me. I want to use and draw and develop the necessary images of interaction I capture and transfer them into images that I can develop. The platform I want to display my series of images on will be digital, so I want to venture more into digital forms of media and explore animating to a certain extent to transform the original drawing's I will create into the final outcomes. I think that focusing on the theme and exploring the differences and new forms of interaction that I haven't covered will be necessary, but I also want to focus on development and techniques of producing my collection of images.

04/15 - robots

A look at factory workers in Shanghai and how they interact- or actually how they don't. Some really interesting stuff about Apple and their maybe-kinda-sort of brainwashing. Most workers choose sleep over food.

04/15 - drawing sketchbook

Examples from my observational drawing sketchbook for my final major project, 'Interaction'.

04/15 - observational research, artist: charlotte ager

I looked at Ager's illustrations originally as I knew a focus within her work is observational studies and that that related to my project directly. The style in which her drawings are created is particularly unique and something that I haven't seen excessively before. The distinctive artistic style and the way Ager has represented the subjects she has studied is eye-catching and the areas in which detail is lacking is made up for in other areas, I am particularly interested in the composition of her illustrations and I am interested in experimenting similarly. I think that particularly because of the limited use of outlining mostly people but as well the surroundings within the illustrations, the illustrations themselves look considerably childlike and quick, which is a quality that I think works in Ager's favour as it is refreshing and doesn't require an intense focus on the details that are presented.

The colour palettes presented throughout a large quantity of her illustrations that I found on her blog are very limited and pastel like and I think that this is a redeeming and popular method of adding colour to illustrations, and I think that my work relates similarly to Ager's in this sense in a few ways.

final major project - test animation

I created the preliminary version of this animation from observing people in the high street and began to want to test out how I could be able to animate further the observational drawings I was creating. I began by scanning this drawing into photoshop and then adjusting the size of the image. I maintained a focus on 3 simple frames sequenced at 0.5 seconds apart from one another and began to re draw sections of the original observational drawing that I wanted to showcase the movement of the people I drew. I think the overall result and the length at which the animation took to complete is substantially sufficient but for further animations I want to focus on a closer relation to the original drawings and manipulating the movements, especially to capture the exact likeness of the original drawing and to create a more fluid animation.

'the sequential image': project evaluation

After being given the brief for the Sequential Image project, I looked forward to being able to create imagery that was not only sequential, but that portrayed my original chosen narrative. As this was something I hadn't done before within my work for this course, I felt it would benefit me should I choose to include a narrative in my final major project, and I wanted to take advantage of as many different techniques within my imagery as practice steps for my final pieces of work in the future. I enjoyed the process of coming up with ideas for narrative and then expanding on them. Character concepts and designs felt especially new, however I really enjoyed this aspect of the project. An afterthought from the project would be to in the future consider the focus on sequential imagery more within the images I am creating. To some extent I think I achieved this, however I could have put more emphasis on this idea.
I think my use of animation within my images have potential and could be taken further, and the techniques I used are definitely an aspect of the project that I will take forward to use with later pieces of work. Concerning the images themselves, I think after looking at them after the porject, I think I should have scaled the composition a little bit smaller as this would have improved the overall look of the collection of images, however I think as a whole they are still successful.

'the sequential image': project outcomes

For the sequential image project, I chose to form a series of images focusing on a narrative around the theme of family. I began drawing up conceptual ideas around a set of characters that I could create to portray the narrative I aimed to use, and came up with the mother & son. I wanted to use an odd and peculiar family set up to portray the importance of family and how unimportant differences between individuals are. I wanted a wholehearted set of images, and in doing so wanted to use some form of animation to highlight this. I went on to draw up the original images and then animate individual aspects of them. I think that the outcomes are generally a good representative of the original idea I had at the beginning of the project, and I think I will be able to use the techniques I used throughout this project within work later on.

05/02/15 - printmaking

For this week's printmaking session I aimed to use a single observational drawing I had in my sketchbook and create a repetitive series of prints whilst maintaining uniqueness within each one. With the use of colour and composition I think I was able to make each print unique, and with using found paper to then block portions of the print from coming through I was able to change each of them into something different.
I think the repetitiveness of the image printed is considerably effective, but the composition kept throughout makes them collectively a strong series of images in my opinion.

02/15 - 'time' project: 'excursion' evaluation

With the excursion element of the 'Time' project I knew I had to experiment more with techniques and media. I think I did still stick to some of the techniques that I tend to use often, such as fine liner drawings, however there was more experimentation I think than there was previously. I did attempt to use colour as a starting point with several of my drawings, and I think the outcome of some of them was successful due to this.
I do think I should have experimented with scales as some of the drawings were similar sizes on a double spread. However, I was very pleased with my composition throughout this section of the project.

I think the quality and composition of my drawings was adequately experimental and I am definitely pleased with the outcomes. I think that my use of photography was limited to an extent and that I should have included more taken photographs of what I was drawing. I think this would benefit my drawings to see side by side the comparison.
Overall, I think the main focus to improve on after this project would be to experiment more with different media consistently.

I developed these images from a series of observational drawings and attempted to create similarities between each one. Images are of various sizes and the media used is assorted papers, cardboards, and acrylics.

A set of prints from my 'Time' project, I used various observational drawings to develop the mono prints to go alongside the developed images I had created throughout the project.

01/15 - 'time project' evaluation

For this project I decided to focus on movement as it was the obvious choice to be able to use observational drawings and develop them in a way that would then highlight the theme of my project. I think that the extent of my developments is good an shows fluidity with my ideas and a relevant thought process throughout. I think my annotation and the analysis of my work is thorough, however I found myself thinking of improvements to be made when analysing my work afterwards. This could be an indication of rushing my developments possibly, or maybe not thinking elaborately enough about how to develop my work further. For future projects I think I should consider this and try not to rush devleloping my ideas.

I think that the developments of my ideas is considerably thorough and how I have analysed my developed work supports that. I do think that I should have experimented more directly with colour and how I would be able to use it with specific images. While there was some experimentation, I do think had I have chosen to take some risks and used different techniques and forms of media, then the outcomes of my developed images would have benefitted considerably from doing so.
There are certain images that I like more so than others, but I think I did have a coherent theme throughout my developments and that the focus is prominent when observing them.

I do think that the lack of experimentation  I carried out with media hindered this project and my outcomes slightly, and going forward I realise I should be more confident in looking at more techniques  to allow my developed images to go further. I think that the collection of images I have from the project could be developed further should I want to, however I am pleased with my outcomes and my justification of my ideas.

19/01/15 - 'time' project developments

For the 'Time' project, I chose to look at and observe people over brief periods of time and decipher, understand and portray changes within short spaces. I think that being able to conduct observational drawings of people and their movement in short bursts, whether real or artificial, will really allow me to benefit to adjusting to draw people and their movements, as currently this is something I am not too strong in. Nevertheless, I chose look at artificial scenarios as well as real ones, in which I have conducted observational drawings, and compare the likenesses and then use both and develop the images I have created further.

I'm aiming to create a range of sequential images and singular images to portray the idea of movement as well as to support the theme of this project. I believe that using an array of colours within my palette will enhance the idea of movement, however I am also cautious of overdoing it.
