collect & create project evaluation - 30/11/14

                   
Combining a focus on both colour and shape, I thought that looking into the concept of people watching would produce the most diverse results. After experimenting with drawing with scissors, creating relevant colour palettes and observing the subjects' shapes and colours, I became more aware of how to go on and develop my obsverational drawings into something further. I believe my developments for this project are consistent in the idea of testing out new methods and observing my own drawings to a detailed extent, but show that I can go on further to develop each individual image should I choose to. I think I benefited most looking into the specific ways to transform a line drawing into something more and in doing so, being able to diversify my outcomes.

artist research: milt kahl


Milt Kahl is one of history's most renowned animators, most noticeably for his work for Disney. As one of Disney's Nine Old Men, Kahl was considered the finest draughtsman of Disney's animators. Back in the day when each character was animated solely by animator, Kahl was significant in portraying Disney's original and unique style of character design.

I've always loved the character designs of Disney's work and more specifically the characters put forward in the earliest days of Disney. Thanks to Kahl it was easy to recognise a Disney character from elsewhere and the animation process that Kahl took the ideas from Ken Anderson and Bill Peet and polished them into the recognisable characters I know of today.

I appreciate Kahl's line work in all the examples shown above as each individual character develops through simple sequence drawings and looking at them in comparison to my own work and ideas I can really see where I can improve and also generate new techniques.
Through Kahl's work in Disneys' Robin Hood, even from a young age, I have tried to mimic the ways in which he worked each animated sequence and the movement he portrayed with each character, something I aim to work on. Through Kahl's examples I am able to see where I am going wrong, what I am doing right and also can highlight where I aim to be with my drawings.

artist research: wonky films

WONKY is an award winning animation company based in Bristol that specialises in both 2D and 3D, CG and stop motion animation. Producing commissions for clients such as Nokia, Adidas and the BBC, the company produces quality short films, skits, stories and trailers for various outlets and platforms. WONKY is made up of fifty illustrators and animators who all differ from character designers to set and concept builders.The way in which their pieces are sought after impresses me considerably and I think that working for a company such as WONKY is certainly something I would aspire to achieve.

  
I particularly like the illustrative work that goes alongside WONKY's film production and the array of illustrators in particular that work there, as well as the 2D elements portrayed in their work. For example in the animations for 'The Ministry of Curious Stuff' for the BBC, the artwork is significantly 2D and based around a hand drawn forefront image with a much more textural background. This is of interest to me considerably as I enjoy the illustrative side of animation and           being able to transfer textural elements into character designs to      then see them in film. This is something I think WONKY      manages to do perfectly and with ongoing projects for outlets such as the BBC I think I will be able to take considerable inspiration from further short films and stories.

After the initial brief given to us for the 1,2,3 project and following my first attempts at observational drawings I aimed for these six development pieces to be more diverse in relation to what media I used. I wanted to focus on a digital set of numbers and use colour but in a very minimalist way. This led me to focus on browns and neutral tones which I think work well with the heavy black lines and shapes throughout. I think improvements could be made within my initial use of grounds-making and with the overall coverage of the page being consistent through all of my developments.

what is a portrait?

Naturally, a portrait is thought to be a drawing, painting or photographical representation of an individual who's expression is the focal point. This being said a portrait could represent a person in many different ways.
  An expressionless portrait could subsequently show more emotion than that of a quick photograph of someone at their happiest. I think this radicalises the idea that a portrait has to be a thought out process in which expression, demeanor, posture and the medium involved need to be considered thoroughly and are the main progressor in implying a message meant to be portrayed. I think it's important to realise that an extremely simple drawing or painting etc. could provoke just as much thought or prompt
just as much meaning as an elaborate piece of art, as both will to some extent suggest the same amount of emotion or intellctual based thought behind it. Personally, I enjoy portraits that aren't as conventional as they not only prompt you to respond to it in an alternative way, but immediately it allows you to learn that there isn't just one way to go about portraiture. However, I do also appreciate  traditional portraiture such as that of Yousuf Karsh who's photography portraits are extremely traditional.

fashion and textiles taster week evaluation 17/10/14

At the beginning of the week I was unclear in general on what Fashion & Textiles was actually all about. After looking through past students' work it became apparent that texture, appearance and cataloging garment ideas and concepts is vital.

When it came to the practical side of the week I was surprised how quickly my ideas came about in relation to the brief given. Doing research on designers such as Alexander McQueen and Yohji Yamamoto, I was interested in the shapes and geometric angles that can be involved in these pieces. After being given a concept image to work off of, I started to use different types of paper and transferred the colour scheme of the image onto said paper. This resulted in around 14 sheets to use on the final piece. 
                                         

After this I drew thumbnails of what I wanted the piece to look like, and stuck to a general 'triangular/geometric' looking  design. The outcome was fairly consistent in terms of my original thought process, and I was very pleased with the overall colours, the shape and how it look both on and off the body. 

Using simple black paper bags to construct the piece seemed daunting at first, however reconstructing the bags around my initial designs then made it clearer as to how I was able to limit there being too much black, but also making black a stand out focus colour, as in relation to my concept image.

Using leftover colour samples I then attempted to reacreate the overall shape of the piece using only the sheets of paper. This didn't prove as successful, however, I think it does show how the colours and shapes in both pieces compliment eachother.

Overall, while Fashion isn't necessarily and area in art and design that I aim to pursue, I was intrigued learning about the processes designers go through and then putting them into practice within my own work.

3D media taster week evaluation 10/10/14


Starting the week off by looking at different types of 3D media artists was generally interesting as it opened my eyes to the multiple areas of 3D design. Looking at ceramicists to product designers, I was really able to see the wide range of different forms of media that come under this genre, some of which I was completely unfamiliar with.

The first workshop was very unique in the fact that whilst feeling the objects given to us in bin liners, and then constructing them from card, I was really able to understand how different people perceived each object and how I, and others, came about in actually re-creating them. This process was strange and extremely unusual in the sense that having to recreate something from a quick sketch after feeling a bizarre object was quite difficult at first.

However, this was mainly the initial stage and I began to find it much easier to establish some sort of familiarity between my recreation and the object. I felt that my recreation resembled the object considerably but my perception of it was definitely influenced by the media at hand and after studying the object itself, I was able to see where similarities and differences did lie.


By Friday, we were in the silversmithing studio. Surrounded by different tools and pieces of equipment I had never used before, it really made a difference listening to the tutor instructing on how to use them safely and properly. Then being able to create our blocks of wood with the metal outer surface was a lot of fun and I felt it really beneficial to be able to be hands on with the equipment, some of which a week prior I would never have trusted myself using. Each was different and equally odd to wrap my head around, but by the end of the day long session I felt easily comfortable with the thought of coming back, should I want to, and using some of the equipment. Shaping each bit of metal and forming it around the block, as well as burning it and creating new colours and forms, really impacted each piece and I think
mine was considerably successful in being both unique and structurally relevant to the brief. At first I was hesitant in overworking the block of wood but generally came more at ease as the day went on in discovering how to manipulate certain textures and effects and how to bring them together. Overall I really enjoyed this taster week, and whilst it may not have persuaded any increased interest into pursuing 3D media studies, I did enjoy learning new skills and discovering new techniques.

visual communication taster week evaluation

Over the visual communication taster week I learned that there is much more to areas such as Illustration and graphic design than I had previously thought. Looking at different artists at the beginning of the week, I became very interested in illustrators Dennis Chapon and Olivier Kugler. Being shown their work lead me to understand the differences between artists in illustration as well as prompting me into doing my own research. Through this I began to look at the work of David Litchfield as his work is similar in style to those we were shown. I think I have been able to draw inspiration from all the artists I have looked at through this taster week and that this has helped me in getting closer to figuring out that visual communications is a field that I would be interested in pursuing.
 Then looking into hand rendered type, Tim Yarzhonbeck's work particularly  inspired me to create unique type and try and stand out. This wasn't very transferrable into the practical side of the week, as observing packaging and creating hand rendered type from that left little room to expand the type's uniqueness. However, I did transfer the skills learnt in observing type closely and analysing it. This then helped me to draw more accurate type within my work.
 Creating our final piece of work for the week then taught me that composition and minimalistic, thought provoking ideas are generally the more successful ones in a sense that obvious thinking and overmaking a piece, specifically within hand rendered type, could ruin it. Experimentation with types of media and the use of shape and line also was extremely important whilst creating hand rendered type.

visual communication research

I chose to look at this article because it, in detail, explains the use of literature, or the lack of it, within illustration. The article's author, Anna Ridley, looks at various different illustrators and explains how they have used the idea of enforcing a story without the use of words, and how they have managed to do it differently. This is something I have taken particular interest in as I studied English at A-Level, and find it fascinating to discover how illustrators tell their stories and the ways in which they do it.

hand rendered type - 30/09/14


After today I've learnt to an extent that choosing a small area of type to render is in practice a lot easier and simpler than it seems. After the first drawing it became much easier to then zoom in on each object and bring the type to scale. I also found it challenging using pastels, especially with the thinness of the lines within type of numbers, but I was pleased with the outcome. Improvements could stem from sizing, as I could have scaled up the type even bigger, however I am fairly pleased that the size of them is big enough.

artist research: avinoam noma bar



An Israeli Graphic designer, Noma Bar's work has been displayed for outlets like the BBC and the Observer. I've previously looked at Avinoam Noma Bar's work whilst studying at A-level and since have been significantly drawn to his use of colours and bold, almost empty blocks of shape. His work is very precise and leaves little to be imagined and I particularly like the use of everyday and specific objects used to highlight a significant part of the person/object in focus. Every piece is similiar to the next and that's something I don't think i've ever seen before and with his use of distinct and smooth blocks of colour I think it makes his work very intriguing.
